Life Is a Gift

Life is a gift
which passes through our waiting hands
on its way to the next friend
to whom we pass it on.

It is not to be hoarded, bottled up
for a special occasion--
for each day is holy
and demands its due reward.

So, we, too, pass it on
to the next one who waits,
with a smile or a tear perhaps,
or even words of anger.

But as the gift moves
from our hands to another’s,
it grows all the more splendid,
more holy and more precious.

So, pass it on!
Don’t hold it to yourself,
lest the gift become a burden
and the crown you wear a noose around your neck.
