Living the Epic That Is Our Lives

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, November 25, 2001

When we have sensed the deep, abiding worth
inherent in our connection to this world,
and have glimpsed the place reserved for us alone
on history’s golden page,
then we will live out the splendid myth
that lies deep in each of us:
Where there once were bank clerks,
there will be heroes instead;
grocery managers will become poets;
truck drivers will be warriors
in the new battle for the Spirit;
and the awkward, wild youth
whom no one could control
will learn to love his life
and live in love each day
held tight and caressed warmly
in the never-tiring arms of gods.

When we have finally stopped looking outside ourselves
for gifts that can be made and given only by our own hands,
then we will return the embrace that life has offered us
all these years;
then we will stride with force and power across this world-
the fully-made men and women we can be
complete in our imperfection, whole in our emptiness,
united as one in our absolute uniqueness--
each one a tiny, insignificant speck in space and time;
each one touching the universe and changing it profoundly,
each moment of our living, waking days upon this Earth.
