A Thanksgiving Prayer

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, November 23, 2008

As we gather together at this holiday season
around a table heaped with unspeakable abundance,
may we taste the divine essence in every bite we take.
May blessed pearls of continuity and change
enter into our bodies and be transformed
into wisdom and truth, love and beauty,
all within these, our most earthen, earthy vessels.

Each act of nourishment is a holy communion with all life;
divine grace, ours for the asking;
ours now to share with all.
 When we look upon the holy light
in the eye of another we see the reflection
of the very God who gave us life.

When we taste the divine essence in every morsel,
we commune with the God who made us and all there is.
We rejoice in the sacred song of Life,
and sing back our gifts of a spirit ever unafraid and hopeful.

So, as we join to share this meal and this holy day,
let us bow our heads in prayer
over these sacred grains and holy morsels:
they are no puny inheritance,
they are our deepest sustenance:
 even of our souls, as of our bodies.

Amen.
