How will we spend this holy hour?

Rev. Jeffrey Symynkywicz, May 3, 2009

This is an hour of grace,
this time in which we are alive;
when breezes gently blow
and remind us all
of the glory of our birth.

It is an hour of grace,
this time in which we dwell;
when sunshine warms us,
sweet rains fall,
and we dance upon the earth.

Is it but a brief hour we share,
in truth, or all eternity?
Don’t tell me that the One
who made this earthly beauty
will send us to a blast furnace
when we die!

Perhaps the heat of the crucible is right here,
amid this earthly joy.
The pain is ever-mingled with the bliss
in any life fully lived.

Our experience is but our innocence expressed;
our freedom, but our responsibility writ large.
Our humanity is, in truth, our divinity enfleshed,
and given birth, and given a home,
and sent to dwell within us.

This is the biggest question that we face:
How shall we spend this holy hour
in which we live, right now?
